Unlock the Earth's Potential with Biochar

Rooted in Nature,
Cultivated by Science

who we are

We nurture soil, plant, and planet health with renewable, soil-sequestered carbon through Biochar, working in harmony with the carbon cycle.

Nourishing Soil

What is Biochar?

Biochar is a carbon-rich material made by heating biomass in an oxygen-limited environment at temperatures above 450°C. Unlike regular charcoal, biochar has a unique thermal profile and has been used historically by various cultures, including the Amazonian and Australian Indigenous peoples.

Benefits and Uses of Biochar:

  • Carbon-Rich Soil Enhancer: Biochar is a carbon-rich material that enhances soil health and fertility.

  • Boosts Soil Aeration and Drainage: Biochar improves soil aeration, drainage, and nutrient uptake, promoting drought tolerance.

  • Reduces Soil Density: By decreasing soil density, biochar enhances aeration, making it easier for roots to grow.

  • Nutrient and Microbe Storage: Biochar acts as a horticultural charcoal that retains oxygen, nutrients, and beneficial microbes while sequestering carbon in the soil.

  • Mitigates Climate Change: Beyond improving soil health and plant growth, biochar helps mitigate climate change by capturing and storing large amounts of atmospheric carbon dioxide.

  • Carbon Sequestration: Biochar locks carbon within biomass (e.g., wood) during production, reducing potential carbon emissions.

  • Removes Atmospheric Carbon: Biochar has the potential to remove billions of tons of carbon from the atmosphere each year through effective carbon sequestration.

About US

Cha Cha Char's Mission

Cha Cha Char ‘s mission is to work with the carbon cycle, and not against it, by making renewable carbon that can be easily sequestered into soil. Our mission will help anyone nurture soil health, plant health and planet health using BIOCHAR.

Achieving Our Mission

Cha Cha Char produces high-quality Biochar, a sustainable form of renewable carbon, using a Kon Tiki Flame Capped Kiln through pyrolysis—a process that heats wood waste at high temperatures in an oxygen-deprived environment. This method prevents combustion and carbon emissions, transforming wood into a stable, carbon-rich material that captures over 90% of its carbon content. Our Biochar is highly resistant to decay and boasts an impressive surface area of 450 m² per gram, enhancing its ability to improve soil health. We repurpose wood off-cuts and dockings from local manufacturers, turning waste into a valuable resource for nurturing soil, plants, and the planet.

How Biochar Works

By increasing pH, porosity, and water availability, biochar creates favorable conditions for root growth and function.

Biochar-soil-plant interactions, particularly around the root zone (rhizosphere), improve nutrient absorption and disease resistance.

Biochar decreases the availability of heavy metals in the soil, enhancing overall plant health.

Biochar helps plants become more resilient to environmental stressors.

Meta-analyses indicate that biochar can increase average crop yields by 10-42%.

As biochar ages, it integrates into soil aggregates, protecting its carbon and stabilizing organic material from plant roots and microbes.

Biochar carbon remains stable in soils for hundreds to thousands of years.

Biochar plays a vital role in climate change mitigation, supporting food security and the circular economy.

What The Experts Think

My animals love their biochar, but they are discerning. When I gave them the Cha Cha Char made in the Kon-Tiki, they lapped it up without hesitation, no different from what they are used to. This was practical, customer-driven, and evidence of product quality.

The animals love it!
